Joe Origins. Pray Away. Inevitably I've already watched D. Pennebaker's Dont Look Back years ago and only found myself appreciating his music all the more, but he wasn't merely just a fantastic singer and songwriter. If anything, No Direction Home only reaffirms the light in which I've always seen Bob Dylan as over the years of great music that he has produced, he was a poet.

And yet from all the highs and lows his career has faced, there was always something more about Dylan himself that makes him a fascinating enough case study, because like all the best artists he refuses to stop: always taking a new….

Bob Dylan polarises music fans like no other artist. There are those who regard him as the great musical force of the second half of the 20th century - a poet, a pioneer, a genius.

And then there are those who say he's overrated; his lyrics are pretentious, his voice is nasal. No Direction Home is a portrait of the artist as a young man: described variously as "a sponge", "a shaman" and - yes - "a genius". Focusing on the period with a little flashing back to his childhood , the three-and-a-half hour film presents his transformation from hero to outcast, as he defined, then rejected, the socially-conscious "folk revival" scene of the period.

Dylan created his most essential art through one of the most politically charged eras in recent history, then refused that either he, or the art, was political. He refuses, usually with humor and charm, to be simplified, classified, categorized, or finalized: always becoming, we see a shapeshifter on a journey with no direction home. Martin Scorsese manages to make the inscrutable performer very human by making clear how quickly Dylan can adapt to whatever surrounds him, as well as absorb whatever strikes his fancy.

By showing so many of the folk artists that influenced the young Dylan, it becomes easier to understand the persona he developed in his early career. Advanced embedding details, examples, and help! This makes it very difficult to find. Thank goodness for the internet archive though. The show was hosted by David Dye. There's a tiny bit more information here , but that's all I can find.
