When I started reading this book, it didn't feel anything different to most of the drama or emotions that we encounter in today's contemporary cinema. What astounded me was the fact that this book was written in , almost a century before, where women in orthodox brahmin families were tied to shackles of traditions and male domination. Coming from a brahmin family, I can rela I got across this recommendation from one of the interviews of Trivikram Srinivas, a renowned writer for Telugu films.
Coming from a brahmin family, I can relate how big a deal it is to do what the protagonist did in the story. The intricate details of a woman's feeling, and how she becomes a slave to her heart was absorbing.
Even if the story deals with intimacy, and an extra-marital aspect, the narration never seemed vulgar, or moving away from the essence of the story. By the end, it is an in explicable feeling that captivated me to the title of the story. The thing that fascinated me the most was how Chalam garu had the guts to take a subject like this which is taboo a century ago and present it with no filters whatsoever.

The author ignores the first argument at one point in the book to justify the protagonist's mistake. A mistake should be a mistake for all, A right should be a right for all and that's equality to me. The story is flawed. There is no justifica I read somewhere that this book is about women having equal choices as men. There is no justification to any of the characters fate. This isn't a love story and this isn't a story about figuring out life.
I agree with the protagonist argument that women weren't allowed to most of things men do. It would have been much better had she questioned the equality for things that mattered I would have hated the book the same way, had the genders in the books were reversed. Maidanam — a book that challenges orthodoxy and throws free-will at your face!
