These types were formulated by John Rawls in his theory of social justice.

The author focused on the research of Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett, who demonstrated correlation between high income disparities in different countries of the world with epidemic occurrence of social pathologies. In Poland the differences in individual income and the poverty zone are increasing. Niby dlaczego? Theoretical interpretations of social inequalities are described from functional, liberal and radical perspectives.

Two types of social inequality are discussed: traditional structural inequalities and dynamic inequalities, that are characteristic of our times. In this context, contemporary educational inequalities in Poland and in other countries are characterised. It is argued that structural reforms in education do little to improve the educational opportunities of children and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

They depend on long- lasting processes of socialisation and upbringing in the family as well as of profound changes in school and teachers' work, taking into account the requirements of the 21st century.

Traditionally, the source of the dominant academic way of thinking about gender relations within the school system is the criticism of the associated androcentrism that leads to the exclusion of girls. In turn, the girls deprived of the possibility of educational success were, according to prevailing beliefs, to be destined to the private sphere. The analysis of the majority of research data, however, leads to the conclusion that the androcentrism of the school class is becoming, at least to some extent, a historical phenomenon.

In the chapter those educational contexts that refer to discrimination against girls as well as against boys are reconstructed and two opposite, yet complementary, images of constructing in equality in the school classroom are presented. That does not mean that social life is imperfect, but rather that the constraints of solidarity are a condition for the development and well-being of society.

In the second context, equalizing educational opportunities is related to the school task of developing rationality and critical thinking. The author describes how the requirement of involvement of public authority in equalizing opportunities in that area is justified.

Referring to the analyzes of Harvey Siegel, he elaborates on critical thinking, showing its components and focussing on factors which decide of its power. He notices that equalizing students' opportunities in the area of developing rationality does not necessarily ensures them highly regarded positions in social life, particularly on the labor market.

The aim of studies presented in this chapter was to explain what being socially excluded mean from a psychological perspective. The author reveals how rejection and ostracism can influence negatively the functioning of the human mind, as well as presents methods to strengthen the sense of belonging of teenagers and to include them in their social environment. The results of conducted research allow to draw valuable conclusions regarding new activities in the school environment concerning the inclusion of teenagers at risk of social exclusion, especially those who report problems in this regard.

Differences between averages recorded at a given level of education were tested using the one-way ANOVA test. It turned out that the average on the scale of the feeling of helplessness during the both subjects lessons in the group of students of the 6th grade is higher than in the 4th grade.

These differences are statistically significant and they occur for the data for the whole scale as well as for each of its dimensions: cognitive, emotional and motivational. In several variables, there were also statistically significant differences between class IV and V as well as between V and VI averages, with mean values always indicating a higher sense of helplessness in older students.

The percentage of the explained variability of the feeling of helplessness by the differentiating factor, which is the length of the school internship, is small. However, this is in line with the theory explaining the emergence of the phenomenon of learned helplessness. Unfortunately, the results of these studies show very limited chances for students to develop a sense of competence in performing their school tasks. Due to the fact that the research was of a cross- sectional nature, its conclusions should be treated with great caution.

Significant arrangements have also been made as regards the dependence between some items on the scale, for example, in the case of boys, with the increase of the gladness experienced on Polish language lessons, their effort to obtain good results increased.

In turn, in the case of girls, the relationship between the gladness on mathematics and the effort put in and the importance of assessments turned out to be infinitesimal and statistically insignificant. The results obtained may be an inspiration for further research and implications for the practice aimed at early counteracting gender educational inequalities.
