Traditionally, the source of the dominant academic way of thinking about gender relations within the school system is the criticism of the associated androcentrism that leads to the exclusion of girls. In turn, the girls deprived of the possibility of educational success were, according to prevailing beliefs, to be destined to the private sphere. The aim of studies presented in this chapter was to explain what being socially excluded mean from a psychological perspective. In several variables, there were also statistically significant differences between class IV and V as well as between V and VI averages, with mean values always indicating a higher sense of helplessness in older students.
The percentage of the explained variability of the feeling of helplessness by the differentiating factor, which is the length of the school internship, is small. However, this is in line with the theory explaining the emergence of the phenomenon of learned helplessness. Unfortunately, the results of these studies show very limited chances for students to develop a sense of competence in performing their school tasks. Due to the fact that the research was of a cross- sectional nature, its conclusions should be treated with great caution.
